Jan. 3, 2026 – The National Staff Organization (NSO) executive committee appointed Alabama Professional Staff Organization member Jesse McDaniel Region 3 director following a recommendation from NSO President Brad Darjean.

“The south offers a uniquely challenging union landscape, and Jesse understands both the obstacles and the opportunities that come with that work,” said Darjean. “He brings credibility, resolve and a deep respect for union staff and the role they play in advancing workers’ rights. Jesse is exactly the kind of leader NSO needs.”
Region 3 includes Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, Florida and the Carolinas.
McDaniel succeeds Florida Staff Organization’s Tammy Whitaker, who retired Jan. 1 after more than 12 years of service to the NSO executive committee. Whitaker is widely recognized for her energy, vibrance and ability to build meaningful connections. She mentored NSO executive committee members and emerging leaders during her tenure.
“Tammy helped guide NSO with purpose, clarity and heart,” Darjean said. “She brought an energy that lifted people up and invested deeply in developing leaders across this organization. We are better and stronger because of her service.”
McDaniel is an active NSO leader. He is co-chair of the NSO communications committee since 2024 and served as a member on that committee since its founding in 2021. His face will be familiar to anyone who has viewed NSO digital reels and live shots from events such as the Winter Advocacy Retreats, Coordinated Bargaining Councils and Representative Assemblies over the last five years. He represents union staff and advocates for workplace justice as a UniServ director in Alabama since 2011.
“Jesse is an exceptionally strong communicator who connects easily and authentically with people,” said NSO At-Large Director Tom Hayden, who co-chairs the communications committee. “He listens, he builds trust, and he knows how to bring people together around shared values. That ability, paired with his deep commitment to union principles and to standing up for those who are still finding their voice, makes him a powerful and respected leader.”
McDaniel said he is honored to serve in the new role. “Union staff are the steady force behind strong unions, ensuring workers have dignity, protection and a voice,” McDaniel said. “I’m proud to serve Region 3 and to support the NSO affiliates and members doing this essential work.”
McDaniel and his wife, Amber, have three children. Outside of his union work, he enjoys traveling with his family and making valiant attempts at karaoke classics.
