The National Staff Organization (NSO) presents the Emil Oxfeld Advocacy Award to one of our members who demonstrates outstanding dedication to union advocacy. First established in 2000, the award honors the legacy of Emil Oxfeld, a respected New Jersey attorney and labor relations consultant who volunteered his legal expertise to NSO for many years. The award recognizes individuals who embody Oxfeld’s passion, integrity and unwavering commitment to defending the rights of NSO members.
This year, NSO proudly names Tom Greene, of Michigan, as our recipient of the Emil Oxfeld Advocacy Award.
A longtime leader within NSO and the Michigan staff union movement, Greene served as president of Michigan’s United Staff Organization and as NSO Vice President of Program on the NSO Executive Committee. Throughout his years of service, he has been a tireless advocate for union members and has continued to support NSO’s advocacy efforts long after completing his elected leadership roles.
“Tom Greene has dedicated countless hours to strengthening NSO and advocating for our members,” said NSO President Brad Darjean. “His leadership, integrity and commitment to the labor movement have left a lasting impact on our organization. Even after serving in some of NSO’s highest leadership roles, Tom continues to step forward whenever members need support. He embodies the spirit of the Emil Oxfeld Advocacy Award, and we are proud to recognize his service with this honor.”
NSO Vice President of Defense Justin Zartman said Greene’s commitment to members has been evident throughout his career. “A steadfast defender of NSO members, Tom Greene’s passion, integrity, and commitment reflect the very best of Oxfeld’s legacy. Everywhere I travel across the country, I hear affiliates speak highly of Tom and the countless ways he has supported them. Whenever NSO calls upon him, Tom generously volunteers his time, shares his expertise, and answers the call without hesitation. His dedication to our members and our mission makes him a truly deserving recipient of this honor.”
Former NSO Vice President of Defense Mike Boyer said his friendship with Greene began after the two ran against one another for the same office in 2014.
“We wouldn’t have run against each other if we had actually known each other,” Boyer said. “We became instant friends on the NSO Executive Board and learned to value each other’s commitment to union values.” Boyer described Greene as “a union builder” whose ability to form relationships has helped create strong and successful outcomes for members. “Tom is loyal, brilliant, funny, and a tireless union advocate,” Boyer said. “I was always one of his biggest fans, and I can never repay the kindness he always gave to me.”
NSO congratulates Tom Greene on this well-deserved honor and thanks him for his many years of service and advocacy on behalf of union members.
