On Monday, July 8, the National Education Association (NEA) punitively locked out its staff union (NEASO) in retaliation for participating in legally-protected union actions.
Despite the support NEASO members received from NEA members on the picket line, NEA decided that instead of shifting to uphold union values, they were going to double down on the anti-union tactics practiced by the very worst school districts and bosses across the country.
NEASO’s contract expired on June 1 of this year and since then, NEASO has filed multiple unfair labor practices against the largest union in the country for failing to follow basic labor law.
This behavior not only threatens the well being, health, and safety of NEASO employees, it sets a precedent that threatens the labor movement as a whole—and stops NEASO members from supporting the important work of NEA’s members.
In response to NEA’s lockout, the NSO executive committee has authorized sanctions against NEA.
Effective immediately, the National Staff Organization imposes sanctions on the NEA due to the lockout of its staff represented by NEASO. The sanctions will be lifted only by notice provided directly by NSO.
NSO members should boycott events and programs of the NEA listed below. Please check back regularly for updates. Members with should contact their affiliate president with questions about locked-out events or whether an event should be boycotted.
