United to Lead, to Promote, to Secure, and to Defend

Each year, the National Staff Organization (NSO) presents the Emil Oxfeld Advocacy Award to one of its members who demonstrates outstanding dedication to union advocacy. Established in 2000, the award honors the legacy of Emil Oxfeld, a brilliant New Jersey attorney and labor relations consultant who volunteered his legal expertise to NSO for many years. Known for his deep legal knowledge and unwavering commitment to union values, Oxfeld’s spirit lives on through this award. It recognizes individuals who embody the same passion, integrity, and fierce commitment to defending the rights of NSO members.

This year, NSO proudly names Rob Day, Esq. of Detroit, Michigan as the recipient of the Emil Oxfeld Advocacy Award.

Rob has served since 1990 as an outside counsel for the NSO. His diligence for our members has earned the respect and admiration of his peers for his tireless efforts in support of fellow staff organization members. Colleagues describe him as someone who has a “sharp legal mind” and tenacious.

NSO President Brad Darjean said Rob Day exemplifies the qualities that made Emil Oxfeld a legend in the labor community — intelligence, dedication, and an unwavering belief in the power of collective action. “Rob has been a guiding light and a steadfast example of calm. I’ve never seen him shook or rattled” said Darjean.  “We owe him a debt of gratitude for his faithful service and millions of dollars he has recouped on behalf of NSO members.”

Former NSO Vice President of Defense Mike Boyer worked alongside Rob for over a decade handling numerous cases on behalf of NSO members. Boyer recalls one notable characteristic that captures Rob’s commitment: “He was the most reliable person that I have ever worked with. Whenever I needed assistance, he was available. He was a great sounding board.”

Mike recalls Rob’s unwavering commitment to justice, describing him as a steadfast advocate who approached every case with both legal precision and deep compassion. “Rob never backed down from a challenge,” Mike says. “He always put the members first and made sure their voices were heard, no matter how tough the fight.”

NSO congratulates Rob on this well-deserved honor.
