United to Lead, to Promote, to Secure, and to Defend

The National Staff Organization (NSO) has launched a new member portal and research system designed to strengthen affiliate administration, expand access to information and modernize the tools available to NSO members and leaders.

The platform brings membership administration, NSO news, announcements, documents and research into one integrated system with a more intuitive user interface.

“This was not simply a technology upgrade,” said Tom Hayden, NSO at-large director and project lead. “It was a deliberate effort to rethink how NSO supports affiliates, shares information and builds the infrastructure needed for the future.”

Building a system for modern union work

NSO’s previous systems, scattered across several tools, limited the organization’s ability to meet the growing administrative, communications and research demands of modern union work.

The new platform is the result of an extensive planning process and a cross-committee collaboration between the NSO Communications Committee and Research Committee. NSO also engaged a new vendor to develop a custom-scripted system built around the organization’s structure and long-term needs.

“We listened carefully to members and affiliate leaders about what was working, what was not and what they needed from NSO,” said Brad Darjean, NSO president. “That feedback helped shape a system that better supports the work our affiliates are doing now and gives us room to grow as the union landscape continues to evolve.”

Member administration and information

The member portal gives affiliates a central location to maintain membership records, identify officers and other key contacts, and access NSO news, announcements and documents.

Affiliates can now also upload bylaws, policies and other organizational documents, creating a stronger repository of institutional knowledge to share across the country.

Affiliates are encouraged to keep their member rosters and contact information current so members can access the portal and receive future services.

Enhanced research tools

The portal also includes an enhanced research system for affiliate presidents, bargaining chairs and grievance chairs.

Authorized users can search NSO’s collection of collective bargaining agreements and arbitration decisions to support bargaining, contract enforcement, grievance handling and strategic planning.

“Modern union work demands modern tools,” said Kelli Williams, NSO Region 7 director and co-chair of the NSO Research Committee. “This system gives our affiliates better access to the information they need today while creating a foundation for the research, analysis and decision-making tools they will need tomorrow.”

Anticipating the future

Future research enhancements will include contextual search supported by a small language model and data dashboards designed to identify trends and provide useful bargaining and membership metrics.

NSO also plans to add an affiliate email system with a built-in drag-and-drop newsletter builder. Affiliates will be able to maintain member lists, create targeted segments and send emails directly from the portal at no additional cost.

Accessing the portal

NSO members can access the portal by visiting nationalstaff.org and selecting “Members Area.” No password is required. Members whose affiliate has added them to its roster will receive a secure login link at the personal email address listed in the system.

Members who do not receive a login link should ask their affiliate to confirm that their membership record and personal email address are current.

“We are excited to deliver new and improved services that make it easier for members and affiliate leaders to access information, communicate and carry out the work of their unions,” said Hayden. “The portal will continue to evolve, and we welcome feedback and bug reports as we refine the system and develop new tools.”
