Matt Ryg was elected NSO Region 6 director at the 2024 National Staff Organization Representative Assembly in San Francisco.
Ryg succeeds Missouri UniServ Director Kurt Swanson, who served on the NSO executive committee since 2017 and leaves a legacy of dedicated service.
“Kurt Swanson has been a strong advocate for members in NSO Region 6,” NSO President Brad Darjean. “I am enthusiastic about Matt Ryg stepping into this role. His passion for union values and his innovative vision makes him the ideal leader to continue advancing NSO’s mission.”
Ryg joined Education Minnesota as a UniServ director in 2015 and held various positions within the organization, including roles in public affairs and negotiations. He currently serves as an education issues specialist in the Policy and Programs Department. Ryg served two terms as president of Education Minnesota Professional Organization (TEMPO), an NSO affiliate.
“I’m thrilled to be able to serve NSO members from Texas to Minnesota and building power to win better terms and conditions of employment,” Ryg said. “It’s imperative that we breathe life into what it means to live by union values.”
Outside of his professional commitments, Ryg is a proud father of two sons, Peter and John. He cherishes their annual ‘guys trip’ tradition, where they explore new places and create lasting memories.
