The National Staff Organization announced today that registration is open for its 2026 Winter Advocacy Retreat, colloquially known as “WAR College,” the union’s premiere training event, set for Jan. 15–17 in San Diego, California.

The three-day retreat brings union staff together from across the country to strengthen skills, build solidarity, and share strategies. Participants will have access to workshops and forums on advocacy, organizing, collective bargaining, DEI, and communication, along with opportunities for connection and camaraderie.

“This is not just another conference,” said Kelley Clouser, NSO vice president of program. “WAR College is three days jam-packed with innovative sessions, meaningful conversations, and the chance to build friendships with union siblings from every corner of the country. Attendees will walk away energized, informed, and ready to take on the next challenge.”

WAR College is unique in that it is designed, developed, and led entirely by union staff. Members volunteer to present sessions that draw on their own experience, ensuring that every offering is rooted in practical knowledge and solidarity.

“There is something empowering about learning from one another,” Clouser said. “You may sit down next to someone you’ve never met, but by the end of the retreat you’ve not only learned from them, you’ve built a connection that strengthens our movement.”

For many NSO members, WAR College serves as both an introduction to national union work and a reunion with longtime colleagues. It is a place to celebrate contract victories, exchange ideas, and find inspiration for the work ahead.

“WAR was the very first NSO event I ever attended, and it ignited a flame in me,” Clouser said. “It is my hope that this WAR College—whether it’s your first time or your fifteenth—gives you that one ‘aha’ moment where you walk out inspired to do something more for your staff union.”

NSO President Brad Darjean emphasized the importance of this year’s retreat. “In a time when labor is under attack, WAR College is more than just training — it is a declaration of unity and strength,” Darjean said. “This is where we sharpen our skills, build new connections and prepare together for the challenges ahead.”

Registration for the 2026 Winter Advocacy Retreat is now open and will close Nov. 16. More information is available at http://www.nationalstaff.org/WAR.
